DETAILED DESCRIPTION
78 Body made in Brazil - fiberglass
Front end - Karmann Ghia (disc brake) front end
Rear end - VW sta. wag.
Transmission and rear end with wide brakes
Wheels (made in Brazil, racing wheels) -
Magnesium (not aluminum), very light
------14" x 6" wide - front
------14" x 7" wide - rear
Nitto Tires (for high speed)
------185 x 14 HR70 Front - 130mph 40,000mi steel radial
------205 x 70 HR14 Back - 130mph 40,000mi steel radial

Engine - VW
1900 cc (1.9 liter)
Compression Ration 9.5 to 1 - Barrel spacers under cylinders .180" because of 69mm pin height on pistons - 78mm crank necessitates this.
bore 88 - stroke 78mm
2 carb (solex 40mm) with paper air filters
525 amp alternator with built in voltage regulator
fuel filter (in line)
fuel pressure regulator (adjustable 1-5 lbs) set at 2 psi
coil and distributor - Bosch "blue coil" hi voltage - 009 distributor
Large cooling tin under cylinders (more even, cooler running)
Small Pulley - anodized aluminum with degree no's.
Heater Tubes - Blue Plastic ( won't rot or break off)
Oil filter - full flow remote mount - stainless steel aircraft braided hoses with aircraft fillings
Oil Pump - stock - pump in blue printed and ported and plugged for external full flow oil filter. Pump is hard anodized for wear protection and close tolerance. This is better than an after market large gear pump. It also uses less horsepower to operate. - stock oil pressure relief valves.
Oil Sump - 11/2 qt. deep sump - aluminum with internal heat conducting stiffening posts - this with filter raises oil capacity to approx. 5 qts.
Rocker Covers - Stock with flat black paint - these seal better than most after market products.
Rocker Arm Assembly - Gene Berg racing set-up with stock rocker arms special shaft with end bolts, steel spacers to eliminate failure because of broken clips of springs. Swivel foot adjusters to lighten value side loading and decrease valve stem end wear.
Pushrods - 3/8" chromoly steel tubular - .035" wall thickness - no flex at hi R.P.M.
Heads - Brand new large valve - 40mm intake /35.5mm exhaust - stainless steel - bored for 88mm cylinders and flyout for 9.5 to 1 compression - valve springs are for rpms to 6500.(single)
Pistons/Barrels - Forged pistons full skirt 1.5mm rings -
Barrels - centrifugally spun iron cylinders won't distort with heat - better wear and ring seal.
Rods - VW built specially for longer stroke crank - rods are blueprinted and balanced.
Cam - "Engle" Racing cam 286 duration/.470" valve lift - good street 1000 rpm idle
street cam - W-110 VZ25 HotCam .006 Intake .008 ex.
Valve Lifters - TRW lightweight racing lifters
Cam Gear - VW - with groove cut through gear teeth to increase horsepower and reduce oil slung about in engine case.
Crankshaft - Gene Berg prepared striker crank - stock striker is 69mm - this one is 78mm. The crank is designed for racing/high rpm usage and should outlast a stock crankshaft many times.
Bearings - All stock VW - two thrust shoulders on cam bearing.
Drain Plug - Magnetic to catch any metal in oil.
Clutch - Heavy duty beefed up pressure plate - 1700 lbs pressure (stock is 850 lbs pressure). Luk or F&S clutch disc - either solid or spring solid one in there now.
Engine fully balanced - Pistons, rods, crank, pressure plate, flywheel, crank pulley.
Clearances - Piston skirt to cylinder wall - 2.5 thousands
-------------Ring and gap 1.5 thousands
-------------Cylinder deck height .050"
Flywheel - VW lighten to 12 lbs - stock has 4 dowels. This one has 8 dowels and special gland nut and washer - larger thicker washer to cover dowel pins. Gland nut is machined off appropriate amount and torqued to 400 ft lbs. (stock torque is 240 ft. lbs.)
Gasoline - Premium, but will run on all types
oil filter - Ph8A or equivalent
Oil - Castrol GTX - 20-50
Spark Plugs -NGK-BP7Hs, Champion - UL824, Bosch - W145T101 (in now), Autolite - AE22, AC - 42FS, KLG - F85P, Lodge - 2HNY

Engine Compartment
Battery - 12V neg. Ground
Fuel Pressure Regulator set at 2 psi - this stock late model fuel pump puts out approx. 31/2 psi on its own, and some put out as much as 7 psi.
Timing Light Hook-up - #15 side of coil ( bottom) and ground and #1 spark plug set timing at 7-8deg. BTDC. above 5000 ft. set to 0 deg BTDC.
Dwell/Tach Hook-up - #1 side of coil (top) and ground. Set Dwell at 50 deg. on meter - .016 with feeler gauge.
Valves - Set when dead cold - .006 both
Pulley fan belt - 6" diameter pulley (stock 7") belt "Power Pulley Belt Made in USA 6EM"

Puma Engine Compartment Wiring
I. Engine Harness
A. Brown wire - to ground
B. Heavy red wire - to screw terminal on alternator
C. Pink wire - to push-on terminal on alternator
D. Yellow wire - to #1 on coil
E. Blk wire - to #15 on coil (this is ignition switch wire)
F. Red wire - to push-on terminal for oil temp. (gauge)
G. Green wire - to screw-on terminal for oil pressure gauge "G"
H. Blue wire - to screw-on terminal for oil pressure idiot light "WK"
II. Distributor wire - chartruse green to #1 side of coil ( top side)
III. Battery - negative ground (blue cable to ground from negative terminal). Black cable and red wire ( they are together) Blk. cable to starter solenoid and positive battery terminal and red wire to screw terminal of alternator ( now there are two wires there, no more wires to alternator.)
